At the annual Microsoft financial analyst meeting, Microsoft put a new search tool prototype on display. The tool allows users to search both the web and a PC's hard drive for matching content.

The prototype, an Internet Explorer add-on, is in the form of an MSN toolbar. The new tool bars results can include email, email attachments, pictures and documents. Results from the web for the same search terms are displayed on a separate pane to the right, according to theinquirer.net.

Some benefits of the new tool are that it searches faster and deeper than the search feature pre-built into Windows, as reported on inforworld.com.

The new search tool is expected to be launched in the next few months. Microsoft will put a technical preview online so they can gather feedback, like they recently did with their new search engine preview.

In the meantime, you can discuss MSN Search at WebProWorld, the WebProNews forum.
