On Friday, June 4, 2004, WebProNews featured an article that pointed out Google was giving a link to Froogle for the first AdWords position in the SERP for the keywords "Fathers Day Gifts". The Froogle ad was appearing ahead of paying AdWords clients.

This is the first time that I've seen Google giving one of their own sites the first AdWords spot over a company that bid for the very same ranking.

I wrote Google for comment but they claimed that they're observing their silent (Blogger re-launch, updated corporate search engine, Gmail additions and subtractions) period.

The link to Froogle no longer appears with the other paid listings. As for the reason why the link is gone or why it was there in the first place, feel free to speculate.
A survey done by Nielsen//NetRatings done to measure Mother's Day shopping traffic showed Froogle received an 80% jump in shoppers.
