An open source search engine called mozDex has launched its beta search engine. mozDex uses "open source search technologies to create an open and fair index."

This search engine was created from the dmoz.org directory. It was created as an open source application because the developers of mozDex are looking to keep search listings fair. A statement in their FAQ says, "the only way one can be certain that search results are unbiased is if the technology which computes them is public."

The look of the results page is similar to other engine's returns. The first 3-4 links are sponsored links (not keyword related), with text ads on the right side of the column. Below the sponsored links is where the search results appear.

One of the features that mozDex includes is the explanation of their rankings as they appear on the results page. By clicking the "explain" link, the user is directed to a page that displays the formula used to position the result.
